A review of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
by Ava Sabel, age 15
Skylight Music Theatre’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a delightful, high-energy celebration that dazzles from start to finish. From the moment I entered the theatre, I was delightfully shocked by THE Dreamcoat hanging center stage—and when I say THE Dreamcoat, I mean the actual coat worn by Donny Osmond in this timeless production some 30 years ago. That magical touch immediately set the tone for the show, a show of many colors, from outstanding vocals, captivating choreography, and standout performances.
The beloved story of Joseph’s journey, from receiving the coat, to being scorned and cast away by his brothers, to using his dreams to navigate a new life, and finally arriving at a powerful full-circle ending, continues to stand the test of time.
Skylight’s production is anchored by amazing sound, with a full and vibrant vocal presence that fills the theatre and keeps Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score feeling fresh and modern. Every musical number lands clearly and confidently, allowing both the humor and heart of the show to shine through.
The choreography by Stephanie Staszak is sharp, dynamic, and perfectly matched to the show’s fast pace and playful tone. Each number showcases strong ensemble work and thoughtful storytelling through movement, keeping the audience fully engaged. The cast attacks the choreography with precision and enthusiasm, creating a visually exciting experience throughout. The “Megamix” number at the end of the show wraps all of these elements together with a perfect bow.
There are standout performances across the board, but the Narrator and Simeon especially stood out to me. Simeon, played by Jake Horstmeier, delivers a compelling mix of charisma, emotional clarity, and strong vocals. “Those Canaan Days” is both hilarious and unexpectedly thoughtful, making it one of the show’s highlights. As the Narrator, Laura Paruzynski’s exceptional acting and singing made me feel like I was watching a Broadway production. Paruzynski’s clear storytelling, vocal control, and expressive presence offered a beautiful lens into Joseph’s journey.
Overall, Skylight Music Theatre’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a polished, spirited production that balances fun with musical excellence. With outstanding sound, crisp choreography, and memorable performances, it’s a colorful crowd-pleaser that fully lives up to the joy and energy of this beloved musical.
