A review of Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical
by Ellie Wilhelm, age 15
Surely everyone knows of the beloved childhood Christmas story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss. This festive story has been turned into numerous movie hits, alternate books, and adaptations. What many do not know is that it is a musical as well. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical has been on a national tour, and stopped at the Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee from November 25-30. The performance truly excelled in portraying holiday cheer, perfect for all ages to enjoy. The show used lots of audience participation, an animated acting style, and great lighting to create a fun performance.
Audience participation was truly an amazing thing that this show utilized that most other Broadway performances do not. There were many times in the performance where actors broke the fourth wall, talking to the audience or telling funny jokes. This appeals to children and helps them engage in the show, helping to create its child-friendly nature. In addition, there was even a point in the show where the audience was asked to say something. This interaction makes you feel as if you are in the show itself, which I really enjoyed.
Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical also had a very unique acting style. The director, Matt August, ensured that every actor was very animated, with over-the-top movements and actions. For example, the Whos, who are very happy people that are very enthusiastic about Christmas, had high-pitched voices and often skipped or ran around instead of walking. This contrasts the Grinch, an unhappy and evil creature, who often had exaggerated stealthy movements and a very grumpy voice. These separate distinct characterizations really helped the show keep its feel from the original movie, which I really enjoyed, but it had its downsides. Namely, at times it was hard to understand the lines the actors were saying due to their silly voices. But, I still enjoyed it all the same!
Another stellar aspect of the show was the lighting, designed by Craig Stelzenmuller. Firstly, the stage utilized stage lights in unique positions, including around the frame of the stage. These lit up in different colors, and helped fortify the quirky aspect of the show. Each song that used these framing lights had a specific mood that the lights helped set. In addition, many colors and washes were used at different times. For example, the bright lights of Whoville contrasted the darker home of the Grinch. During songs like "You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," a green wash was placed over the stage to convey the evil feel. Not only this, but the lighting went above and beyond by having spotlights that occasionally flashed different colors into the audience. While some may not enjoy this feature that occasionally blinds them, I think that it was a really cool way to add to the enjoyment of the show.
Overall, this production of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical stole my heart! This show is sure to appeal to families with all ages of children, and everyone can enjoy its beloved story. Although the musical is more underground, it really felt like I was watching the original show on TV, as well as having some new, fun additions! While the national tour left Milwaukee, the production still has quite a few pit stops left before the holiday season ends. It will visit Des Moines, Sioux Falls, Memphis, and Charlotte. Even if you can’t catch the show, many more national tours will visit the Marcus Performing Arts Center that you won’t want to miss!
