A review of The Pigeon Gets A Big Time Holiday Extravaganza!

Have you ever read books about The Pigeon? Or other books by Mo Willems? I certainly have! But here’s a question… have you watched a play where the script was written by Mo? I have! I watched a play at First Stage in Milwaukee that’s called The Pigeon Gets A Big Time Holiday Extravaganza! The play featured lots of feelings, including lonely, sad, happy, and excited. That made the play really relatable to all ages. Some of my favorite parts of the musical were the music, the humor, the lights, and the Pigeon puppet!

The songs in the play, with music by Deborah Wicks La Puma and lyrics by Mo Willems and Adam Tobin, were awesome! One song, featuring the Catchy Holiday Squirrels, goes,"Falalala, dodododo, catchy holiday song!" The Catchy Holiday Song Squirrels (and the whole entire cast) were amazing!

Just like Mo Willems’ books, this musical was very funny! In one of the most humorous parts of the play, Elephant and Piggie were trying to give each other a present. Gerald was worried about the presents not being perfect enough for each other, but Piggie demanded to know what was inside of Gerald’s present for her. Then when they finally opened each other’s presents, before Gerald found the actual present, he only found tissue paper! Gerald said, "Paper! A lot of paper! I love paper! It is one of my three favorite things from trees along with mangoes and…something else!" This was one of my favorite scenes in the show!

Another of my favorite parts of this play were the beautiful lights, designed by Maaz Ahmed! There were snowflakes, spotlights (I always love a good spotlight!), and more!! I loved the lights!

Finally, the Pigeon puppet was so cute! It looked exactly like The Pigeon from the books! At the end, it even had a cute hat on. Puppet designer Nicki Kulas did a perfect job with it.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed watching the play The Pigeon Gets A Big Time Holiday Extravaganza! You can see more plays at First Stage if you visit their website!
