A review of Dad's Season Tickets

by Charlie Fetters, age 15

Dad’s Season Tickets, a musical about the Green Bay Packers, is a show I never would’ve thought I could say I enjoy. I don’t exactly understand how football is played, nor do I care to learn, so going into this Waukesha Civic Theatre production, I expected to somewhat enjoy the characters. However, I was insanely surprised by the incredible actors, musical aspects, and comedy.

This cast is INSANE. It’s just talent on talent on talent. Not only did they make incredible acting choices, but they are amazing singers, dancers, and have SUCH great comedic timing.  They portrayed the character dynamics, personalities, and emotions so well. Their choices helped me to realize that it wasn’t simply a show about football, but family as well. I was so captivated by their stage presence, and I can’t even begin to describe how in awe I was watching them perform.

In reference to the musicality and comedic quality of this show, I was shocked. The director (Justin Spanbauer) and music director (Heather David) did absolutely incredible work on this show. The actors sounded SO GOOD, and you can feel the energy and hard work that went into learning the score. I especially appreciated the choices Spanbauer made during the more comedic songs (such as the battle between Gabby and Edgar), as well as the more serious ones. Be prepared when you see the show, because thanks to these decisions, it truly does feel like a sporting event.

If you think that this show isn’t for you, think again. It truly is one of the funniest shows I’ve seen to date because of how ridiculous it is. There is an aspect for everyone, whether it be football, family, or the orchestra. I applaud the director for guiding these actors into creating such an entertaining and engaging show.

Dad's Season Tickets runs through September 28th at the Waukesha Civic Theatre.
