A review of Pippin
by Madelyn Verhyen, age 14
Sunset Playhouse’s take on the musical comedy Pippin was the epitome of razzle dazzle and nothing short of extraordinary. The production was all about a prince named Pippin wanting to find the meaning of his life. After everything he tries, he winds up always wanting more. The main theme, contrary to the glamour of the story, is to settle for your happiness. This was a new show for me, and I feel Sunset Playhouse did an awesome job telling Pippin’s story.
The costumes, made by Lisa Quinn, crossed gender norms and were sparkly except for Pippin, Catherine, and Theo. In my opinion, this shows how the other characters are just thoughts in his head, or making the “glamorous” thoughts. There was a beautiful dress Fastrada (played by Leah Lewandowski) had on for her performance of "Spread a Little Sunshine." I hope they were able to take their costumes home, because I wouldn’t have passed up that offer.
Though the entire cast contributed and was astonishing, one person really stood out to me: Sarah Cunningham, the Leading Player, had lovely runs and vocals. She also used her dancing and voice to change throughout, and with, the story.
I did not expect the ending in the least, and I believe this show needs much more hype. The piece is very abstract, and there is some swearing. For those reasons, I would say it would be for 13-year-olds and over. Younger kids also might not understand or appreciate the deeper meaning. Come see Pippin at Sunset Playhouse from October 16 to November 2, and you will be "On the Right Track."
