A review of Moon Over Buffalo

Moon Over Buffalo at the Waukesha Civic Theatre is truly an enjoyable experience and super comedic! Many moments will make you giggle and laugh very hard. The play is a must-see for any comedy and theatre lovers in the area. In this review, I will talk a little bit about the story, one of my personal favorite moments, a bit of feedback, and some things you should know before watching.
With an amazing cast of hilarious actors including Tony Davis and Tanya Tranberg, the play tells the story of two washed-up Broadway actors, Charlotte and George Hay, as they struggle to get back up on their feet and reach the top. When they learn that the film director Frank Capra will be seeing one of the shows they are performing in at their local theater in Buffalo, New York, the couple immediately believes that this is their big shot at getting back into the film business. As other characters pitch in to help the show, the play explores relationship conflicts and the struggle to rise to the top once again, all in a hilarious way.
The cast and creative team truly does an amazing job at capturing different characters at different moments, while also making a huge joke about it in the meanwhile. One of my favorite moments in the play is during the big show that Frank Capra attends and everything that might go wrong eventually does! It is definitely something everyone will laugh at.
Some feedback I will give this production, which I saw on preview night, is to keep the pace up a bit more in the first parts of the show. I feel like the first couple minutes lacked a bit of energy, which is very much needed to start a play, especially a comedy. Another thing I would like to see is for the directors and designers to use the sound and lighting in a greater capacity. Since an enormous part of comedy is making a huge exaggeration out of everything, the sound and lights are very much needed to amp things up and make everything sound and look like a big joke to laugh at. I was definitely thinking during the show that they could use a funny "bonk" sound or colored lights pointing at different things.
Some things to keep in mind for audiences: the show does contain some profanity and some sexual content, so it’s recommended for audiences 14+. Actors will be going up and down the aisles at some points so if you do go just make sure to keep that in mind. Hope this helps you decide who to bring!
Overall this is a very funny and comedic show, and although it hadn't quite reached its full potential when I saw it, it’s a very good way to spend your day and I would definitely recommend it for a fun night out in Waukesha. I highly suggest this show to everyone reading this review. So go buy your tickets now to see Moon Over Buffalo at the Waukesha Civic Theatre!
