A review of Dad's Season Tickets
by Madelyn Verhyen, age 13
The Waukesha Civic Theatre is putting on one of the only musicals set in Wisconsin: Dad’s Season Tickets, running Fridays to Sundays until the 28th of September. This musical comedy is about the two oldest Kosinski sisters, who have hated each other since as long as the youngest sister can remember, competing to inherit one of the most prized possessions in their family, their father’s Packers season tickets. This story is not only about growing closer, but also growing as a family. The plot and message are two of the many reasons I loved this show.
Justin Spanbauer, the head director of Dad’s Season Tickets and the writer of Mars Lost, which was part of WCT’s Black Box season last year, had one goal and one goal only: to make the show as fun as possible. And that he did! He thought out of the box in every choice he made. It’s not very easy to combine sports and theatre, but this show had that sporting event feel. There was a live band, a photo booth, and inflatable thunder sticks.
Justin isn’t the only one responsible for this amazing production. This show would not have been as spectacular without Heather David, the vocal director, and the outstanding cast. The actors were their characters, that’s all I can say. I truly believed they were their role. My favorite song was “My True Colors” because it was one of the most comedic songs. The band did not disappoint either. They brought the energy to the stage.
I love musicals, which is another thing I love about Dad’s Season Tickets, but I do understand that not all people have that same opinion. Though this show may not be right for everyone, especially Bears fans, it was a good laugh, and I appreciate what it took to make the atmosphere more like the games at Lambeau Field.
In all, Dad’s Season Tickets was entertaining, the actors brought the sporting event energy, and the musical would be great for a family outing or anyone who loves the Packers.
Running through September 28th at the Waukesha Civic Theatre.
