A review of The Prom
by Kennedy Freiberg, age 12
The Prom is a musical comedy about Emma, a lesbian that just wants to take her girlfriend to the prom, but the P.T.O won’t let her. At the same time, a group of failed Broadway actors that are getting cancelled for being narcissistic decide to find a cause to help, and come across Emma’s story. Will they end up getting their prom and come out in peace ? Or will they have to stay in the closet? Overall I really enjoyed The Prom. The actors really sold the story and it was a very enjoyable experience!
I would like to start by saying just how amazing Ryder Ruck’s performance as Alyssa Greene was. Their voice was just breathtaking, and their acting on top of it was just mwuah—perfection! During the scenes where their character was supposed to be sad or upset, it felt like they actually were sad or upset. It was the kind of acting where you can’t tell if the person is acting, and that takes true skill. Honestly I can tell they have a bright future ahead of them.
I would also like to shout out KyraJo Petit-Walla (playing Emma Nolan) and Jason Peregoy (playing Barry Glickman). These two worked so well together! It honestly felt like an uncle-niece relationship, which they took and grew into a beautiful friendship. Of course the performers also have their strengths apart from each other as well; both of their voices were just so beautiful and truly fit their characters, alongside their acting where they just inhabited the characters and made them their own.
Lastly I would like to talk about Evan Crain (Scenic Designer) and how cool the set was. I loved how the rooms changed seamlessly, from the hotel to Emma’s bedroom to the school. The lockers were also so cool; I loved how when it opened it looked like an actual locker. Also the props (designed by Taylor Venden) were awesome! I love how they used actual phones and I really liked all the decor in Emma’s room, since it just shows off her personality and interests!
In conclusion, I had a blast at The Prom! The whole show was just well put together. I tried to think of anything I disliked in this show and I couldn’t think of anything! If you can, definitely go see The Prom at the Waukesha Civic Theatre!
